Creating a Scottish Reel - Getting Ready for a Tutorial

OCTOBER 8

This was the day which I had to present some material for the composition. Although I had some outlines of ideas (as shown in the last entry), I still had nothing down, nor a completely formed idea with which I was happy. Taking the ideas from the last entry, I created a short 8 bar melody, which would eventually evolve into the final A melody. The first 6 bars are essentially a cleaned-up version of the ideas I had created in my experiments, arranged in a way that emulated the structure found in Pig Pen. The last two bars were created with inspiration again from Pig Pen, written without the instrument and with the simple aim of creating the desired contour. It was far from perfect and sounded a bit off, but it would do for a draft. As you can see below, I created this draft is Flat.io (have a look at my review for more information about this!). You can have a look at the file here.

As part of this draft, I also began sketching ideas for the accompaniment. Drones are very common in folk music, and feature at the start of Alasdair and Natalie’s The Corrie Man. I also experimented with a few note changes but had not yet begun working with creating a groove, or really any form of rhythmic drive in the accompaniment.
